Concert Summary

A legendary figure in the history of jazz, trumpeter and bebop pioneer John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was a player of unparalleled facility as well as a consummate entertainer and charismatic raconteur who brought joy to audiences all over the world. A perennial favorite at George Wein's annual clambake in Rhode Island, his appearance at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival with a superb quintet featuring flutist-guitarist Les Spann, pianist Junior Mance, bassist Art Davis and drummer Teddy Stewart came just a few months after Gillespie's Verve release, Have Trumpet, Will Excite.entire summary

How groovy are these guys? You can just imagine a warm summer night in Newport, this music drifting through the air, verrrrry nice.

The quality of recording of the New York concert is better than the two at Newport. I have a lot of recordings of live concerts by Diz at places like Salle Pleyel and Olympia in Paris, Royal Festival Hall, London. Montreux, Carnegie and they all seem to have something extra when compared to studio recordings. No trumpeter since can compare to Diz.

This is a nice rare treat. Mainly for Teddy Stewart on drums. He had played in Dizzy's Big Band in the 1940's. I saw this band at the Metropole (Top o' the Pole) in NYC around 1960. Leo Wright had replaced Les Spann. Les Spann's story is very sad. He lead a date on Riverside called Gemini. He was a very handsome man and later went with Quincy Jone's band on guitar and flute. Unfortunately the booze got a hold on him and he virtually lived in a cardboard box in NYC and died a homeless person. Very Sad.

Just the best..Was there ever a jazz trumpet player who had the chops, swing and ideas of Dizzy Gillespie?, not for my money and this concert certainly demonstrates that..simply superb..DP
