I saw Dizzy and his band perform in the late 1980's at the Amphitheater at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. That is still one of the best concerts I have ever seen, and the elephants and giraffes were diggin' it too.

In 1977, I attended the 25th anniversary of The Newport Jazz Festival at Saratoga Performing Arts Center(SPAC)in New York. The last group that played on Saturday night was a "supergroup" which included the following members: Roy Haynes(drums), Tony Williams(drums), Bob Crenshaw(bass), Herbie Hancock(piano), Al Jarreau(vocals), DeeDee Bridgewater(vocals), Dizzy Gillespie(trumpet), Michael & Randy Brecker(tenor sax/trumpet), Sonny Rollins(tenor sax), Dexter Gordon(tenor sax), Larry Coryell(guitar), George Benson(guitar), Jean Luc Ponty(violin). They played together as a whole group for about an hour("Night in Tunisia", etc) and then broke off into different combos and played for another hour. George Wein(Newport concert producer) told the audience, "you are witnessing history tonight folks, because the world will probably never see the likes of a lineup like this again!" Needless to say the music was sublime and I felt very fortunate to be there. I was 18 years old and had driven up from Miami with a sound engineer friend of mine who was in his senior year at The University of Miami's Jazz School(recording&engineering). I'll never forget it... Rob MacNeill

Excellent show! One of Bill Graham's lasting contributions: billing jazz and blues acts alongside the rock performers. Another fine job by the Vault.... I hope it soon becomes available for download!
