Concert Summary

By the time Dire Straits recorded this show at London's famed Hammersmith Odeon Theater in the summer of 1983, they had become one of the most critically acclaimed rock bands on the planet. With singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Knopfler at the helm, they had already released three platinum albums, and were out with a brand new fourth album, entitled Love over Gold. King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast this shortened set, but the entire performance from this night was released on Alchemy, the band's first live…entire summary

This concert is better than the Alchemy release. Maybe it's because I heard it live on the radio in 1983 and was lucky enough to get a blank cassette into the machine in time to record it. Maybe it's just a tighter set, but it's one of my all-time favorites and I'm desperately hoping it's available for download when the vault cracks next month. Yeah, it's an overlap with Alchemy, but it's somehow way better.

Wow! I want to agree with the guy who wants to buy this recording. I'ts frickin' dynomite baby! My brother is a jazz sax player in Chicago (Pat Mallinger [if you want to look him up on the web]) and he turned me on to good contemporary jazz. This is a great mix of jazz, country and jam music. I love this stuff. ...........Marky Toes

Hi Moish, thanks for the helpful comment. We've fixed the date and summary for the show; the mix-up resulted because our original tapes are mis-labeled. As for the sound, you're hearing an earlier mix without many of the post-production effects you can hear on the release. Thanks for listening and for writing in. -Dopeburger

Forgive e, but this proved to be most disappointing. Yes, it is from Alchemy. Only the entire dynamic range is squashed flat, it's just a touch too slow, as it sounds when a battery is dying on your old cassette walkman. The sound quality is so poor on this, it makes me skeptikal about what they're doing to the sound on everything else. One last thing. It seems the language in the blurn deliberately obscurs whether it's ultimately from Alchemy: "The complete show featured on this ‘83 tour, with other radio faves such as "Sultans of Swing,” can be heard on the Alchemy disc. However, if you’re a Dire Straits fan, this recording is a must hear." Use of the word 'however' suggests that this recording is uniquely different from Alchemy. The music is great, but by the discs, both video and audio. Not nice, but thanks for the effort to bring us music otherwise uavailable, Wolfgang.
