Concert Summary

Devo was certainly the most interesting - and one of the most successful - of the acts to emerge from the new wave musical movement. This show, recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour in 1981, features the band at the height of their popularity, when their videos were staple programming on MTV. The band was touring behind its fourth album, New Traditionalists, which actually was the beginning of their artistic decline. New Traditionalists only did well because it sold off the huge success of the hits "Whip It" and "Girl U Want," which had been on the band's previous LP,…entire summary

I was not really a fan until I saw them live in Chicago at the Aragon BRAWL Room in the summer of 1980, after Freedom Of Choice. The place was 110 degrees inside and Devo put out 110%. Many highlights, but the one that sticks out is Uncontrollable Urge with Mark, Jerry & Bob #1 jumping up and down in unison. The 2 hits of blotter might have had something to do with it as well..

Saw this tour in Dallas - got a pair of tickets from a crew member that was a buddy from California. Stunning live set - killer sound (thank you Mark, Doug & Company). There are some good clips from ABC Television's short-lived "Friday" series on YouTube of this tour - the set's opening number and "Coalmine" encore are there. The use of the industrial conveyor belts on stage was brilliant and years ahead of its time.

I saw them on this tour in Atlanta at the Fox theatre. It was good and they were walking on treadmills most of the show, not something you see very often.

Good gosh, I was at this show! Toward the middle, they showed a film wherein some corporate suit is advising them on how to be more commercially successful, and at one point he says, "Look, boys, I can forgive you for being Artists, but I can't forgive you for being stupid!" Hilarious. A great night, and off to see local favorites Human Sexual Response afterwards. Had to walk home 'cause the 'T' (Boston's trolley system) stopped running around midnite ...
