Concert Summary

David & David (a.k.a. David Baerwald and David Ricketts) only recorded and released one album, 1986's Boomtown, which got critical raves and went gold. It was as close to a masterful work of adult-oriented pop as anyone has ever created, including Steely Dan, the Band or Todd Rundgren. With a stellar backing band, they did this one album, propelled by two hit singles…entire summary

This is an amazing and super-tight performance. I'm one of those idiots who bought the album years ago in my youth and just listened to Boomtown until I wore it out. Hearing all the other songs here has been a revelation. Every song is well-written and fabulously produced, especially Being Alone Together and Rock for the Forgotten. Amazing songwriting played by incredible musicians. I'm really curious about why they broke up and why they didn't release any more albums. What a shame.

I remember this album was played in its entirety before every Peter Gabriel European gig on his 1987 tour - saw them all bar 3... ;-) I was hooked and loved it ever since. Hearing a live rendition of the songs is fantastic!

This is one of the best concerts in the entire Vault. And these guys are unbelievable.

I had a friend who was always turning on his friends to new and innovative musicians in the mid-80s. D and D was one of them. Living in Denver, D and D came to town and played the Rainbow Music Hall (small venue perhaps 1,000 in attendance). Standing front row, the lights went dim, and they started with "A Rock for the Forgotten". The intro seemed to go on forever....we could smell the intense cologne of David Baerwald before he even came on stage. Pitch black, his scent was so strong I knew he was right in front of me and as he sang his first word, the stage lights came on and there he was in, if memory serves me right, a lavender suit. The show was incredible, studio-perfect but with variations to keep you guessing. Remembered as one of the best concerts I have seen out of 100 . A magical evening. I later found out, that the band had stayed at a local La Quinta motel and that the taxi they were to take to the show was late. They asked the Manager there to drive them instead. That manager was someone I knew later in life and told me that they were the most down-to-earth group of musicians she had met.

I was extremely fortunate to have accompanied Stu Hamm to a few of his David and David gigs. Each David brought something unique to make the music immediately gratifying without being predictable. Together they were formidable and it is regrettable they could not sustain their relationship on stage. I have never tired of listening to their album. It is masterful because it is intelligent, under stated, dark, uplifting, adventurous and rhythmic. They had everything it takes to be super duper stars.
