Concert Summary

A legendary, revered figure in jazz, pianist-composer Dave Brubeck has always been a reliable draw for George Wein over the past 55 years at the Newport Jazz Festival. In fact, his recent appearance at the 2009 festival, at age 90, was as highly anticipated an event as Brubeck's first appearance at Newport back in 1954. Brubeck's performance at the 1964 festival with his regular quartet featuring longtime right-hand man Paul Desmond on alto sax, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums was typically swinging, imbued with intricate counterpoint and polyrhythms and marked by signature…entire summary

Growing up in the 40's & 50's, The Benny Goodman swing era was my main link to jazz until I heard a Dave Brubeck recording on the radio around 1955. I've been a huge fan ever since. I've even started colllecting some of the CDs of his early college tours before Joe Morello joined the group. I don't think Brubeck and Desmond ever played better. Morello changed the sound of the entire group and made them more popular than ever but I still love to hear the earlier recordings. These old Newport Jazz Festival programs are classics.

Dave always felt that the audience was the "fifth" member of the quartet. I was privileged to see the "classic quartet" at Newport in '66 and '67. I hope those concerts become available as well. Thank you!

Brubeck's group sure could swing in those days. I have always thought that many jazz critics were unfair about Dave's piano playing. There is not a lot of difference between Ellington, Monk and Brubeck in my opinion although I personally was never keen on the 'Time' albums.
Anyway, listening to this concert has inspired me to revisit my old Brubeck vinyls. Thanks for this great gig.

I'm not a Jazz expert, but on Take Five, do I hear a classical influence in the main melody riff? It feels so structured but so loose. California Cool at its best.
