Concert Summary

Departing the seminal San Francisco band, The Charlatans, Dan Hicks was a true original who pursued a distinctly different path, veering away from the electric psychadelic music then at its prime in 1968. Following a few years of practice, performing, and personnel changes, Hicks settled on the classic lineup, releasing several memorable albums on the Blue Thumb label featuring an eccentric blend of folk, country and old…entire summary

The last time I saw Dan was in Woodstock NY a couple of years ago with a fantastic group of associates. He played all his new best and best of the past. I could barely make it home to Saugerties

Back in Modesto in 1971, there was a high-school kid who aspired to be Bill Graham. Lucky for us, he put on a bunch of dance/concerts for the Catholic Youth Organization -- including a terrific evening at Our Lady of Fatima with this band. Sublime...

Dan is the Walking One and Only! BTW, he has a great band right now rivaling the early days, with 2 new great hot licks and a super guitar and fiddle player.

I saw Dan Hicks for the first time at Fillmore West in December 1969 because a college friend said I should go see Sha Na Na. Dan opened for Sha Na Na and let's just say he made a fan for life. This was the pre-classic lineup and they were still great. I've seen them 6 more times in concert since then and I will have to say the current lineup is the best I've heard since that classic lineup in the early 70s. However there will never be another Sid Paige. His violin solo on I Scare Myself still sends chills down my spine!

Dan's the MAN. Sound quality's terrible... nothing better in all of BG's vault?

I first saw the Licks as opening act for the Doors a month after Jim Morrison died. In fact, my wife used to hang out in the Haight at Mike Wilhelm's house(of the Amazing Charlatans) when Dan was putting the Licks together. He asked her to audition for the band but her ex-husband wouldn't let her. So the job went to Maryann Price instead. If you get a chance, pick up Dan's 60th birthday concert from the Fillmore available from SurfDog Records. It has all the original Hot Licks plus a who's who of the SF music scene. Check out Sid Paige and David LaFlamme of It's A Beautiful Day on "The Buzzard Was Their Friend" from the DVD.

nice show with mediocre SQ. I was watching their 91 Austin City Limits reunion show last night which needs to be officially released! Thanks for putting this up; it's amazing how well this music has aged.

Dan Hicks & Hot Licks @ College of Marin, Kentfield, CA was my very first concert experience on February 26, 1972, just a few months prior to this performance. A helluva way to get kick start a life-long passion for music and Dan Hicks' particular brand of music which is a lot of fun to listen to. Listening to this broadcast recording brings back those exciting memories. I remember the lineup, Hicks making sure everyone got some of the spotlight; Sid Page was mesmerizing on violin.
