Concert Summary

A wonderful interpreter of ballads as well as an inveterate swinger, Miss Dakota Staton is one of those singers from the '50s who seems to have fallen through the cracks of time. And while she may not be as widely regarded today as jazz vocal legends like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, the sheer expressive power of her voice is undeniable and her dramatic delivery as compelling as her tough, sassy stage presence. Staton's scintillating performance at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival was one of the highlights of that Saturday evening, which also included performances from…entire summary

Wow! I first heard Dakota Staton (The Late Late Show) whilst going through my father's record collection when I was about 16. (Along with some great Della Reese albums). What a great voice and a unique style. I'ld love to have seen her perform.

From the first time I heard Ms. Dakota Staton on "The Late, Late Show" album around 1959, I became a fan of hers. I have most of her recordings, and even though she is gone, her music lives on. I wish I had gotten an opportunity to see her perform in person.

Thanks for bringing this live performance to the www. I can remember my first exposure to DS when I was thirteen, the album was entitled, "The Late, Late Show," back in 1960. One day in 2008)I was browsing through a vintage jazz section at a record shop and there was the album on CD, talk about Christmas--I rushed home and put the cd on and after 40 plus years I still got that same feeling from hearing this great voice!

Wow! Having attended the first early Newport festivals while in high school and college while this stuff is wonderful the performance that sticks most in my memory is the jam session that happened the first night of the first Newport Jazz Festival when most everyone from Armstrong to Fitzgerald joined the Stan Kenton Band already on the stage and must have jammed for what seemed to have been a good hour.
