In early 1968, the Black Panthers were still perceived by many as a band of young black ideologues harassed by the federal government. Although they were formidable figures, Huey Newton and Stokely Carmichael were known to Bill Graham because he had produced a benefit for the Panthers in 1967, and by the June 2 date of this concert, the organization and its supporters were enraged at the April, 1968 police shooting of a 17-year old unarmed Panther.
