Concert Summary

One of the most important figures to come out of the Swing Era, Count Basie presided with regal authority for 50 years over a dynamic big band that defined the art of group swing. Their appearance at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival, coming two years after an acclaimed live album (1957's Count Basie at Newport on Verve), was a typically swinging affair marked by a steamrolling momentum and highly polished execution by the brassy juggernaut. A string of potent solo voices in saxophonists Frank Wess, Frank Foster and Marshall Royal, trumpeters Joe Newman, Snooky Young and Thad Jones,…entire summary

I saw The Count in 1979 with Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson opening and Ella Fitzgerald headlining with his orchestra. It was one of the most incredible shows I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. I was only 16 at the time. It truly was a moment in history...

Saw Basie and band in NYC in the early 60's. Joe Williams did 'Well, alright...' and he was the only one not moving...stood stock still and delivered this rocking piece that still delivers after all these years. got a kick out of the fan feeling he was stuck with unannounced vocalists...I don't think the Count ever played with anyone who didn't swing, or if they hadn't they did after working with him. In my 79th year and just want to get up and dance. great stuff.

This song was used by Woody Allen on the soundtrack of one of his movies. Which one?

Hi there. This is a stellar concert, but I withheld from giving it any rating. The reason being is that this should be titled Count Basie & His Orchestra with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross and Joe Williams too. Or at least, Count Basie & His Orchestra vocalists. Wordy, yes, but well over half the numbers have singing on them.

I don't want someone to pay for a download, only to find out later that it isn't only the Count Basie Orchestra performing. Unlike me, they might not enjoy all the vocal numbers. They should know about it in the concert title. Imagine if they had a concert listed as The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, but only when you listened to it or read the fine print did you find out that Frank Sinatra was singing on most of the songs!

In addition, there might be fans of Joe Williams or Lambert, Hendricks & Ross who inadvertently pass up a great performance.

OK, off my soap box now....enjoy the show!!

The definition of "perfection" is "Count Basie"! My stepfather, Mr. Wardell Gray, was an alumnus of the Basie band. There are few things in my life which make me more proud...
