Concert Summary

Copperhead was a short-lived hard rock group led by John Cipollina, who played guitar for Quicksilver Messenger Service until leaving that band in 1970 following such classic discs as 1969's Happy Trails and their first, self-titled record from 1968. At first, Copperhead was a loose association of musicians centered around Cipollina, but eventually Copperhead tightened up into the four-piece lineup that recorded their sole, self-titled 1973 LP, and that appears at this show. The show, recorded at Winterland in San Francisco, includes four songs from that album, including single…entire summary

I have to echo Murthe1-2 on the 10/21/72 show. I was there as well and remember it well. As I recall, there was some guy in the audience who said he could blow harp better than Mike's harmonica player so Mike invited him up on stage where he blew everyone's socks off. The other part of that gig I remember was the giant monster jam at the end and Jim Champlin and Jo Baker doing call-and-response while Elvin, Mike and John traded lead runs and the guy from the audience blew with Paul Butterfield on the meanest two harps I ever heard in one place.

Thanks but, Greg Douglas never formally played with Copperhead but was a good friend and associate. He played in various bands with John Cipollina and other members of Copperhead including Terry Dolan's band Terry and the Pirates (with Weber and Hutchinson from Copperhead) of which there is an excellent KSAN broadcast floating around from the Record Plant in Sausalito circa 1974. Greg currently has a website which I believe lists his credits.

August 31 , 2007 , I happened to be in Santa Cruz and a band titled Moonalice was playing at Moe's Alley . We decided to check them out. It featured the two best bass players in bay area rock history . Jack Casady and Pete Sears , with G.E. Smith on guitar and other Flying Other alumni . I ran into Pete Sears in the Men's Room and we struck up a conversation about what a great place Winterland was . I told him I was one of "The Regulars" in the seventies , and in my opinion he performed the best bass solo I had heard there . He said it must have been with Jefferson Starship and I told him no , it was with Copperhead. If you read this Pete , the date was October 21,1972 . Elvin Bishop Group , Copperhead , The Sons of Champlin and Mike Bloomfield and Friends . I was lucky to be at so many great shows . Nights like those will never happen again . Thanx, David.

Anonymous has it right. But Greg Douglass also played guitar from time to time. The band played great as long as they stayed away from the nose candy before the gig. But that didn't happen much. We all miss John

Your Info on group Copperhead is wrong. They were always a 5 piece band! The original bassist/pianst being Pete Sears. Jim Mcpherson also played bass and piano and they would switch off. Later when Sears left to join Jefferson Starship, James "Hutch" Hutchinson joined the band and became the sole bassist, performing live with the band as well as being credited, pictured and playing and singing background vocals on their sole self-titled LP. With McPherson's departure shortly after the sole albums release, the band worked as a four piece unit with Cipollina, Phillipet, Weber and Hutchinson. There never really was a second CD in the can. The band recorded demos constantly during it's existence and there are plenty of these floating about in various combinations. Hutchinson later went on to play with Link Wray (with Weber and Cipollina) The Neville Brothers Band and Bonnie Raitt (with whom he has performed and recorded with for over 20 years). Also, John Cipollina recorded with The NOVATO FRANK BAND, not the FRANK NOVATO BAND. Pianist and frequent Cipollina collaborator Nicky Hopkins ans bassist Hutchinson also played on this CD.
