Concert Summary

You're about to hear a winning battle in a losing war. Sadly, things weren't going well for Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen in 1976. They'd certainly gone further than they'd ever imagined when George Frayne IV - henceforth known as The Commander - assembled his band in 1966. The move from Michigan to San Francisco had provided a great showcase for their fine mix of rockabilly and Texas swing. A recording contract…entire summary

What a freakin' line-up. Every guy in this band is an outstanding performer in their own right. Don't agree with the note on Got a Live One Here. I enjoyed the heck out of that LP, although it doesn't completely give you the full Commander experience, but then only seeing them did.

and of course, Andy Stein, the fiddle player has been on the Prarie Home Companion for many years now...every week.

Bill Kirchen is still getting it done! I've seen him several times in the last few years ( like tonight i saw him in Vienna, Va 3/7/09 )and despite his age ( mid 60's? )he is as spry as a youngster and still rips off these incredible solo's. I swear he goes from lightining fast country picking to Hendrix like psychedelic to sweat soaked blues..all in the same song! What he does w/ Hot Rod Lincoln now a days has to be seen/heard to be believed. ( check out youtube ).........CCC

One of the greatest Shit Kickin' Bands of all time. Me and my mate Daryl had breakfast with Bill Kirchen in Byron Bay Australia 5 years ago....he was stunned that me and Daryl get all over the place in Big Trucks and we love Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen....Many is the time we have been rumbling along the Highway singing into the wind "You gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod lincoln...." God bless Bill and that glorious Band!!!

I just stumbled upon this site and I am totally knocked out. There are two people who I don't miss if they are within a couple hundred miles of me. Jerry Lee Lewis and The Commander. I'm lucky enough to have seen the Commander many times in a small club setting. We're all getting really old now and it is a real kick to hear these live concerts. My deep appreciation and humble thanks to you.

Please note Norton Buffalo's stellar harp playing AND singing....it's his lead voice on Truck Driving Man...and Norton rarely gets enough credit for being one of the first hippie-swing-country harp players who could rival Nashville's Charlie McCoy, lick for lick. Buffalo, of course, went on the play with Steve Miller and put down one of the most famous rock harp breaks on Bonnie Riatt's verson of "Runaway". He put that track down when the producers had called in nearly everyone in LA Studio Fiefdom to make it work...and they couldn't. Norton nailed it while suffering with a 101 degree flu temp....

Most bands would dream of being this great at the end of their line. This is a solid hot recording of one of the greatest bands ever. Todays so called Americana or whatever the crap they call it now, can't even get close to the greatness of the Cody band. WORD UP Wilco and their ilk go home ; more Commander anyday!!
