Concert Summary

Along with Tower of Power, Cold Blood pioneered the Bay Area's brass heavy funk-rock sound. After debuting at the Fillmore in 1969 and initially signing to Bill Graham's new record label, they had developed into one of the most high-energy bands in all of San Francisco by the time this recording was made in 1971.

I've been groovin' on these guys since 1969. Played on the same ticket with them in San Fran in the late 60's. One of the best ever!

I just saw Cold Blood in Portland at the Roseland. They smoked! I can't tell you how many times is saw CB . The first time was at Fillmore West. I worked my way over to the right side of the stage so I could see the Tower of Power rhythm section up close. A cute little girl slipped through the crowd, got in front of me and started dancing wildly. I remember her hair smelled good. When CB came on next, I realized that it was Lydia that had been going crazy in front of me. Once, I saw Tower and Cold Blood and I think Dan Hicks at a place in San Raphael called Pepperland, It was a big dance hall that's claim to fame was a quadrasonic sound system. That place didn't last very long, but CB was on fire. They had the chop and were a profound influence on so many young musicians like myself coming up. If they are in your neighborhood go see 'em... they are even greazier and the funk is more distilled and refined.

My wife and I grew up in the SF bay area during this time and saw them a few times. We actually saw Lydia and Cold Blood here in NM the night before the 40th anniversary Summer Of Love gig at GG Park last summer. We were eating buffet dinner at the Route 66 Ind'in Casino and didn't realize we were sitting across from the band until Lydia, who was sitting on the opposite end hidden by the guys, got up to get a drink. She really is that tiny. We had a nice conversation and then went and watched them play for free. She is STILL 4'11" of pure Nitro.

Hey boobie, Sandy McKee is the drummer here. I know that solo in Shop Talk and that is definitely him. He also sang great too, singing with Lydia on "Funky on my Back"

This great band still tours. I saw them, only Lydia was from original band, and she smoked through these songs with ease. I got to meet her afterward. Very nice lady. I remember seeing her as a kid in the early 70's and she would wear these mini skirts and would stand up front against the stage at Winterland and dream. She made my little boy fantasies.

I saw them open for Tower Of Power at the Circle Star Theatre in San Carlos in 1973. Both bands were hot!!!

First off when this was recorded I was a young man who was in the 7th grade living in the Hayward area of the east bay. My brother 8 yrs older than I was a drummer and my inspiration for becoming a musician as well. Anyway it was summer of 71 around July 4th. I had listened to an album with a female vocalist that even at my age blew me away " Lydia Pense " I listened to the album over and over again. loved her voice. As I listened I also heard the band itself and loved the sound. I started working on the guitar parts as that's what I played About a week later I was with my brother at band practice as usual. there were the guys in the band and a couple other guys there. For my help with setting up equip and helping out. I was learning from the exposure. From the guys teaching me personally ( I could at this time play the guitar, drums, Hammond B-3 etc ). After practice I was introduced to one of the other guys who was there that day. His name was Larry Fields. The original guitarist from Cold Blood. He and I sat for awhile talked and played the guitar after awhile my brothers band, Larry, and I played a few numbers together. I have to say in the fallowing year or so he was responsible for introducing me to Jazz, funk etc.. He was a nice person and always willing to spend time with me when he came to our house. (We had a full rehearsal/recording studio built onto our house) About a month after meeting Larry I was to meet Lydia I was already in love with her voice. after meeting her I was also in love / lust with her. She was so beautiful, sexy, My first crush on an older woman. Listening to her sing after that was a whole new experience. I have seen her several times since though have not talked to her. last time about 3-4 years ago. She still gives me chills when I hear her sing. last I heard Larry gave up music to become a lawyer ? Thank you Larry for the kindness . And thank you Lydia for the fantastic voice. as well for being the inspiration of a very young mans fantasy's. DSS

Great YouTube video of "....Hummin'" From last days of the Fillmore. There's a female singer from New Jersey whose vocals remind me of Lydia. Her name is Christine Santelli. funky and bluesy

I lived on the east coast in the time frame Cold Blood was doing the great music on the west coast scene, somehow I found this music in a small record shop in New Jersey and took a liking to it. They were without a doubt cutting edge for the time and the music was great. The shame was they never got the national exposure they deserved. Lydia was and is a great voice and I and happy she has carried the music to this day. May Cold Blood live on.
