Concert Summary

There are those who will argue that it was Chuck Berry, not Little Richard or Elvis, who was the real architect of rock 'n' roll. In reality, it was the combined influence of all those early rock pioneers that built the foundation of this style of music, but Chuck Berry certainly was one of the four main cornerstones. Was there. Humble dude. Really loved BG for all he does. Someone like that who had already seen it all knows when a real decent person is runing the show. But right then this was so cool because Steve Miller was .........almost psychadelic but came from blues and great talent. Great show. Chuck had the moves and had played these licks?????????? how many times. He just walked throught them and enjoyed himself. Try to think where rock would be without his unheard-of before intros to every tune?? Yeah you know

Chuck played the Filmore I think in summer of 68. Jethro Tull was supposed to play the headliner, but Ian Anderson sprained his ankle or something. Anyway, Chuck volunteered to play 2 sets. He was rock'n the place. Great memories of him and his duck walk.

You are right about Johnny Talbot and the Thangs, Corry. Although the information says that this was recorded on Sunday at the Fillmore, I saw the show a few blocks away at Winterland Auditorium on the previous Friday night. Chuck Berry was awesome.

I think the group backing Chuck Berry is the opening act, Johnny Talbot And De Thangs, an East Bay R&B group who also played some Fillmore gigs. The Steve Miller Band did back Chuck Berry in late June 67, some of which was even released on a Mercury LP, but this set doesn't sound like them. In any case, it was more typical for Chuck to be backed by an opening act.
