Chuck's biggest influence on the guitar was Louis Jordan's guitarist Carl Hogan. In fact, Chuck copied many of Carl's licks note for note, just as Keith Richards copied Chucks. Another big influence on his playing was tenor sax player Illinois Jacquet. He claimed Illinois' choices of notes and melodies had a big influence on his playing. But in Chuck's heart of hearts his passion was big band swing.

One influence on Chuck's playing that comes to mind is T-Bone Walker.

It's great that Chuck used this venue to expand on his formatted songs and really cut loose. He jammed. We all know who was influenced by chuck. Jimi Hendrix,Brian wilson, keith richard, jerry garcia but who were chuck's influences? howling wolf- is the only person i can think of. Of course Chuck and Johnny johnson were writing partners on most of these songs, even though J.J. is uncredited . I read somewhere that chucks sound is his very influenced by sounds that came from the piano and not other guitar playing.

Hey Ian (12/29/08), Does the name Johnny Johnson the legendary pianist who played with Chuck for over a decade mean anything to you? Was Mr. Berry difficult like many Icon's, yes. Did he have his share of idiosyncracy's like most of us? Yes. Was he a genius, most would agree. Who cares whether he had a "regular touring ensemble"! It's irrelevant, I'm sure if you asked, most people would say they went to see Chuck Berry not his drummer. I also hate to break it to you, but he's not the first artist who showed up expecting to get paid and placed a priority on it especially given his roots. Sounds to me like the Jerk in this case is the pot callin' the kettle black
