Born in New York City on June 25, 1945, Carly Simon was introduced to music at a very early age. Her father was a pianist and her mother was a singer, and it wasn't long before their daughter followed in their footsteps. She released her first album before just before her 20th birthday, when she teamed up with her sister Lucy and created a group called the Simon sisters.
After three albums and minimal success with her sister, Simon set off on her own and released her self-titled solo debut in 1971. The album was a success and featured a top-ten hit, "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be." She crafted a follow-up in November of the same year, which hit #30 on the Pop Albums Chart. The title-track "Anticipation" hit #3 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. At that point, Carly Simon was a rising star and her third album shot her into the stratosphere. No Secrets was a runaway success, ascending all the way to #1 on the Pop Albums Chart. Writing most of the songs herself, she solidified her role as one of the top female artists in pop music. The album's lead single "You're So Vain," also hit #1.
Carly Simon continues to release albums steadily to this day, and though she enjoyed her highest amount of popularity in the '70s, her newer music is still relevant. Besides music, she has also been involved in acting, literature, and social activism. She has actually written five children's books; the first one Amy the Dancing Bear came out in 1989.
Carly Simon married singer-songwriter James Taylor in 1972, and the couple stayed together for over 10 years and had two children. After their divorce, she married poet James Hart in 1987, but the couple divorced in 2007. She is currently living in Martha's Vineyard. Though she rarely tours these days, she continues to perform sporadically and continues to be involved in music. Carly Simon's latest album, Never Been Gone was released in October of 2009.
