Concert Summary

Canned Heat embraced the dawn of the West Coast counterculture in 1966 and hitched a ride on the rock 'n' roller coaster for over four decades. Although only drummer Fito de la Parra remains from the late 1960s lineup (and he was not the original drummer), the band is one of the few acts to have played both Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock, as well as the 20th anniversary Woodstock concert held in Bethel, NY in 1989. The group had made a name for itself in the rock press in the '60s when they frequented many legendary venues such…entire summary

Even though this concert has historical value (Canned Heat were on a downhill slide by this point - but Hite, Vestine and de la Parra still knew how to get down 'n dirty!) I really hope the vault will release a recording of Canned Heat with Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson still with 'em. They played the Fillmore a couple of times and I'd be surprised if none of those performances were recorded.

    A quick line up overview:
late '67 - july '69: Hite, Wilson, Vestine, Taylor, de la Parra (the "classic" line up)
july '69 - may '70: Hite, Wilson, Mandel, Taylor, de la Parra (check out their Live in Europe '70 album for this lineup. Mandel sure brings in a new sound without killing the buzz, so to speak)
may '70 - sep '70: Hite, Wilson, Vestine, de la Barreda, de la Parra

The band played a few dates in Europe as a quartet after Wilson's passing before they flew Joel Scott Hill in to replace him. Sadly this decision was, in retrospect, much too quick. With organized rehearsals they might've been able to find someone who was more fit to live up to Wilson's creative role in the group. Nonetheless, long live Canned Heat!

Fun band!. Harvey Mandel added a great psychedelic dimension to that band . But it does not sound like Harvey Mandel to me here. The soloing, despite being still great, is too conventional to be Harvey.

hey cooke, Mandel and Taylor left Canned Heat to join John Mayall in May of 1970, Wilson passed away in September of 1970, and this concert is from December of 1970. Sounds like you got to see them before all of those changes.

That is not Vestine - during this period (I saw them in 10th grade at U of Del in early 1970) and Wilson was still alive but Harvey Mandel was on guitar.

I always thought Vestine was an average player. Very erratic and loose. An ultra smooth guitarist for this band wouldnt have worked but Hollywood Fats was great for Canned Heat. Not too smooth but still polished.

Love this band. I agree with the sentiments regarding Al Wilson. They were never the same. Having said that, the 10 year woodstock anniversary was the best line up since he departed and was easily the best live gig that was captured by this band. Hollytwood Fats and Jay Spell bought a lot of energy and style and substance to the heat. They were a very tight and cohesive unit in '79.

Fito de la Para is a drummer with character. A communicator in my opinion. He has done a great job to take care of the Canned Heats Legacy on his official website. Thank you Wolfgang, to stream some of the old stuff.

Powerful and real music, like it's never been done since then
