Poster Art Q & A

Description

As was the norm back in the early days of rock concerts, this Buffalo Springfield show at the Family Dog's Avalon Ballroom was billed as a "Dance Concert," thus inviting many a young, local hippie or music aficionado to strap on their dancing shoes for a multi-billed night of rock 'n' roll. The Family Dog was the Bay's concert promoter up against Bill Graham Presents, and while the relationship wasn't always mutually beneficial, it bred a healthy level of competition and kept ticket prices down for the patrons. Buffalo Springfield, at this very early juncture of their career, were just beginning to forge a sound that helped pioneer the burgeoning country rock scene out of Los Angeles. Supporting act the Daily Flash was a Seattle-bred psychedelic rock outfit that made many a trip down to the Bay to take part in the counterculture's uprising. In essence, this vibrantly hued poster is definitive of the kind of music and art that was most influential in the mid-'60s.

The 1st printing is lavender and yellow and bears "The Bindweed Press" notation in the bottom right hand corner. It measures 14 3/16" x 20" and was printed prior to the concert.

The post-concert 2nd printing (see FD037-2) is lavender and green, and instead of the Bindweed Press, it bears a "No. 37-2" in the bottom right hand corner and "(c) Family Dog Productions, 1725 Washington Street, San Francisco" in the left hand corner. It measures 14" x 20".

Wolfgang's Vault owns one of the world's largest collections of original concert posters, featuring hundreds of rock posters, political posters, sports posters, comedy posters and others that were previously unavailable to the general public. Virtually all of our concert posters are in mint condition, and many are signed by the headline performer or the graphic artist.
