Duality and motion grip this Wilson poster: male and female, yin and yang, sun and moon, East and West. His colors, silver and a chartreuse-tinted silver, symbolize the rational and spiritual, respectively, and re-circulate in continuous loops.
The 1st printing A of the poster pre-dates the concert and displays a great deal of ink variation, especially apparent in the yellow and silver. The paper stock used is textured with fine horizontal rows on the reverse. This printing measures 14" x 21 1/2".
The 1st printing B was also printed before the concert and displays ink variation. The paper stock seems slightly different than the 1st printing A because the paper stock was flipped during printing so that the image was printed on the reverse side. The fine horizontal rows mentioned in the 1st printing A description are barely noticeable under the black ink on the front of the poster. This printing also measures 14" x 21 1/2".
When the Avalon Ballroom and Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium began to hold weekly dance concerts, Wilson was called upon to design the posters. He created psychedelic posters from February 1966 to May 1967, when disputes over money severed his connection with Graham. Wilson pioneered the psychedelic rock poster. Intended for a particular audience, "one that was tuned in to the psychedelic experience," his art, and especially the exaggerated freehand lettering, emerged from Wilson's own involvement with that experience and the psychedelic art of light shows.
