Concert Summary

One listen to this astonishing live radio broadcast and it is immediately clear why there was so much excitement and acclaim surrounded the release of Bruce Hornsby and the Range's 1987 debut album, The Way It Is. Not since Elton John and Billy Joel had such a prolific singer/songwriter/pianist burst onto the international music scene with such a brilliant first release.

Some of the best shows I ever had the chance to see were Bruce Hornsby and The Range! I'll never forget the show I saw them play at the Cincinnati Zoo! Awesome!

Bruce is an outstanding song writer and musician. When he puts on a show, no matter the setting or the accompanying musicians, you walk away feeling that you were truly blessed with music that will stay with you for some time. Always make time to see and hear him in person. You won't be disappointed.

I agree that Bruce is a real class act. I saw him in the mid '90s at a small theater in the round just north of Buffalo, NY. The opening act cancelled at the last minute. He came out by himself and announced that HE was the opening act. He played for about 45 min, took a 15 min break and came back out with the band and played another 75-80 minutes. Saw him a few years later and he still amazed me.

I was there at the Grateful Dead's performance on 10/28/91, the day they had to bury Bill Graham, in Oakland...Hornsby played with Vince Welnick, in some of the most inspiring, emotional sets of that era. You could tell how much Jerry loved playing with Bruce. The "Stella Blue" was especially trancendent.

Bruce has just about more class than anyone. He truly has fun, too. This was/is a terrific show!

I agree with rafie. I saw Bruce in 94 or 95 at a little bar on the Ohio State campus called the Newport. He played some of his music but only because people were throwing request "notes" up on the stage and he'd play whatever song that was on the note he picked up off the floor. It was amazing. By the end of the set he let whoever just crawl up on stage and dance...I was one of them! Great memories..

The lineup listed isn't correct; Bruce announces Peter Harris on lead guitar at one point.

I saw Bruce Hornsby live at Fairmont State College while I was a student there. He had just finished the tour with the Grateful Dead. He said that he thought he was done; but his manager reminded him of one more date. He told the 1000 of us that ad packed into the small basketball arena that he could make no promises. He had just finished a tour with the DEAD. Most of the night, the rest of the band merely stared as he wondered down beautiful runs, nothing to do with the song he was playing. He played two hours of requests of "other peoples music". He did not play it like a cover band. Each was a Bruce Hornsby original and generally with the band just watching, hoping they could join. It was in their faces, that night, that i realized I was watching a true genius, doing what he does best. The rest of us were just happy that he allowed us along for the ride.

Their first CD is one of my all time favorites and it's thrilling to hear the band live. Fantastic!! Thanks!!
