Britney Spears

In 1999, a 17 year-old pigtailed, navel-exposed youngster joined the line-up of Total Request Livers on MTV. The hit was "...Baby One More Time." and the artist was none other than Britney Spears. Probably Googled as much as she's publicly scrutinized, Spears broke onto the teen pop scene in the late '90s with a poppy, non-explicit style. The "Hit" marked a beginning of what no one could of predicted: a self-proclaimed Madonna-wannabee. Her sophomore album, Opps!...I Did it Again, debuted in 2000 and became the first album by a female artist to sell over a million copies in its first week. Her next album, Britney, revealed a sexier, more grown-up Brit and featured the hot track "I'm a Slave 4 U." Since the release of Britney, Spears has made it her #1 goal to prove that she is "a woman and no longer a girl." Like her idol (remember the onstage tongue in a ratings-heavy MTV award show?) Spears has a knack for drawing enormous attention to herself in both her career and personal life. Two marriages, huge amount of record sales, pre-teen fan clubs, and an horrifying amount of paparazzi attention culminated in a very public mental collapse but Brit is surely here to stay in the limelight as she continues to focus on her career.
