Concert Summary

Brand X was the original "jam band" in its native England, and although it is mainly a jazz ensemble, the band was more closely aligned with the prog-rock movement that spawned ELP, YES, Gentle Giant, and Genesis.

This recording is taken from the band's second U.S. tour, taped at New York's famous Bottom Line on Halloween 1978. The band had recently experienced a burst of commercial success, largely due to a well-publicized alliance with Genesis member, Phil Collins. By the time they had found an audience in the U.S. and Europe, Brand X was essentially a jazz-fusion band but its…entire summary

It would be great if these guys were still touring but i`ll be greatful to have seen them (Goodsall,Jones and Katz) once in Buffalo,NY at The Tralfamador Cafe back in the late 80`s. Thank you guys!

These were the days... total freedom of expression! You could do anything musically that you could imagine live and on record, and show the middle finger to the critics and the press... this is a musical spit-in-the-face to the music industry. You could play songs 20 minutes long, with great virtuosity, in your pajamas. You could be a cult hero to some and a public enemy to others. What an exciting time, and what an exciting show!

that solo sounds to me like a Morris Pert AND Mike Clarke drum duet.

  • Dopeburger | Wednesday, October 15, 2008 | 3:21 pm

Haha, thanks for the shout out, syncopatico. We did in fact uncover some new material, including the John Goodsall introduction heard here. The early show (including Happy Halloween wishes) will be released within the next week or two, so stay tuned. See you there!

Ah, things are starting to make sense thanks to the wonderous Wolfgang's Vault! So this is the almost complete late show except for the very end of Nuclear Burn and the encore which was probably Deadly Nightshade(?). I guess WV should also list original guitarist John Goodsall in the credits since he makes a 'special guest star' appearance on Access To Data and The Poke. (This means that the versions of Nuclear Burn and Deadly Nightshade on the 'Rated X' bootleg must come from the early show (or maybe the previous night if it was recorded too?) Hopefully Dopeburger (nice moniker!) and his buds can dig up the early show (hint, hint!) so discerning listeners can get to hear that incredible 20 min. Deadly Nightshade again--and hopefully without Tom Scott and his crew 'sitting in' this time!!!

I think syncopatico is right. This sounds like two nights put together.
