Concert Summary

Brand X originally formed in 1974 as a project by Robin Lumley (an early member of David Bowie's Spiders From Mars), session bassist extraordinaire Percy Jones, and former Atomic Rooster guitarist John Goodsall. The name came about when they rented a popular music rehearsal studio just to jam. The group had no name, so an attendant at the studio logged them as "Brand X." When the group was offered a deal on Island Records, the A&R exec liked that name, and it stuck. The band's initial recordings were rejected by Island as having little commercial appeal. Unwilling to change their sound, the…entire summary

My 1978 John Goodsall story We lived north of San Diego so L.A. was not terribly far, especially when bands like this are making a rare appearance. having kept up with the personnel changes pretty well, we knew that Phil would not be on the drums. This was 20 years before the internet so we didn't know every little thing. We got into the Roxy Theatre and found seats at a table off to the left side of the stage. Amid much laughter (and drinking) the lights went down and the musicians approached the stage. When the lights came on there was a guitarist I'd never seen before and he had tons of sheet music strew out in front of him! So where be Mr. Goodsall?? This fellow (who I take to be Mike Miller as mentioned above) was managing to hit most of John's marks and the group interplay was working pretty good. JG is inherently interstellar at a nanosecond's notice but this was pretty good inspite of his not beiong on the stage that night. After the 2nd or 3rd number, there was just enough light to scan around the room. Behind the seats & tables on the same wall as us, there were a few people standing in a doorway between a break in the curtains. I knew instantly that one of them was John Goodsall! During the next song, I made my way over there as discretely as I could. I looked right at him and he smiled at his being recognized. I leaned forward and said, loudly to be heard over the band's full din, "Thanks for all the great music you've given us and we're missing your playing tonight. What's the story?" At the same time I was putting out my arm to shake hands. With this motion I looked down to see that he was answering my question by holding a tiny male figure who also had his arm extended! In that swift second I realized that JG had injured himself and that traditional handshakes were going to be out of the question. So I gently shook the little man's hand, bowed as graciously as I could and made my way back over to my seat for the rest of the show. That's something you never forget and my friends were blown away. TMcD

Wickedly awesome of Wolfgang to have this up! I was 8 yo when this show went on :))) Percy is absolutely mind blowing bass player, even if he plays with just a drum machine... super! A

now this is obviously incomplete--seems the KBFH engineers had a "field day" with the editing of this one!, but any Brand X is better than none!!!! (Guess it's worth it to hold onto the old tapes of the FM broadcast, so you can hear things like the guy yelling out "Where's John?" before the start of Nuclear Burn, and the conclusion of Deadly Nightshade. Also, on the broadcast and the 'Rated X' boot disc, Nuclear Burn (set closer?) comes before Deadly Nightshade (encore?), but here with some clever editing during the band intros (listen to the change in ambiance as Peter Robinson finishes introducing Mike Miller), the order is changed. But still high praise to Wolfgang's Vault for uncovering this show's opener, and for allowing us to hear these tracks without the added tape hiss found on the FM broadcast version!!! And for those missing John Goodsall, check out the almost complete late show for his 'guest appearance' on two tracks, of course. Happy Halloween!

Though John is not manning the guitar duties here (this may have been during the period that his arm was bothering him), this is still an exceptional collection of live tracks. Nonetheless, John Goodsall is probably the greatest guitarist know to me; and this for a synthesis of reasons. As such, the show seems to fall just a little short of the serious outside energy that John can harness and bring to the table. Don't get me wrong, this is A material. It's just not transcendent from a performance standpoint, like some of the other Brand X and Fire Merchants material (when played out). Deno
