Concert Summary

This late show from Boston's 1977 appearance in Long Beach was recorded while the band was making Don't Look Back, their second multi-platinum release, which was released that year. The band was still promoting the first album, and most of this show consists of songs from that classic Boston record. One that yielded such hits as "More Than A Feeling," "Rock and Roll Band," "Something About You," "Smokin'," and "Long Time." They do, however, offer up "A Man I'll Never Be," which, at the time, had yet to be recorded.

This recording proves that while the band may have been the…entire summary

I saw Boston on that tour with a European friend my age (mid-20s) and a bunch of adolescents. We all had a great time. I think Scholz is a genius of song craftsmanship and a perfectionist in guitar technique just as much as he supposedly was a pioneer in electrical engineering, so I was in awe. My friend was just amused to watch the American scene, and the kids got their rocks off - a perfect show.

But when you've got a Scholz type musician, it's a rare gift to get them in a room with suitable partners in creation (as opposed to just strong support). Boston was a quality bunch, but there wasn't the sort of brilliant complement to Scholz's vision that makes a group great for the ages, like Cream or the Who or the Stones. Boston just sounded good, fizzled out and was gone. For every supergroup of matching strong musical personalities, there are many inspired individual talents out there like Scholz who will never get to have that same sort of immortality. Lucky are the few who can create their own complements by playing all the parts themselves, like Rundgren or Prince or Stevie Wonder ...

Saw Boston at an outdoor show in Oakland, in the rain, in 1978. They ROCKED. Then someone stole my awsome pictures I took that day right out of my high school locker. Oh well.

IT was 1977 my friend armed with his reel to reel tape player recorded this concert off the radio. i transfered to cassette.it soon became my favorite recording.1980 roll around and the tape broke.i just wore it out.and i was in the navy. i was devastated.in 1982 i hooked up with my old friend who had buried in his closet the old reel to reel tape.some of it was recorded over. some parts were chewed up.i tried my best to savage what i could but it never sounded the same.now Ive found it again and i am in heaven. television politition is missing but ill just get that from the early show. i love the internet.

Every time I hear Boston with Brad's voice and harmonies I go back in time to the 70's where life was good and the music was great. The Boston wall of sound is so unique it is unmistakeable when heard. Long live Boston, R.I.P Brad. You are forever in our hearts and ears.

If this is the show that had The Outlaws as the opening act, I was there. Great, great show. I don't remember there being two shows that day though...Can someone who was in Long Beach back then remember?
