Concert Summary

Despite hitting the top of the charts several times in their native Ireland, the Boomtown Rats never really caught on in America. Their label, Columbia Records, had hyped them as the next big punk band, saying they would be in the same league as The Clash and The Pretenders.

It didn't happen - mostly due to the fact that they never had the material to win over radio programmers,…entire summary

wow! that gave me goosebumps hearing i don't like mondays first performance! imagine hearing what many believe to be the rats greatest hit just being born! i envy the guy before my post for being there and thanks for the visual of the mikes in the middle and the piano.

I was at this concert. Yes, it was the first public performance of "I Don't Like Mondays." Because they only had piano, they just stood in the middle of the stage gathered around two or three mics. They performed it as the encore.

to be fair - the straight-ahead rockers 'blind date' 'never bite' work as does the clever 'eva braun' and the catchy 'she's so modern.' No shock that Geldof became a populist as the strength of his energy works best as a poignant Bono-type seen on the warm final number, 'Monday.'

ragged though sloppy with sharp inciscive lyrics - busting forth with energy but intelligent Geldof's practiced act is pompously unappealing - akin the sour stench of one too acquainted with a singular form of alcohol. The playing never inspires beyond its limited genre form -
