Concert Summary

This recording was made in 1977 at New York City's Bottom Line, when Booker T & the MG's had reformed to make Universal Language, a new studio album. The band having officially disbanding in 1972, the LP and tour came as an unexpected and welcomed event for thousands of soul music fans. The MG's, originally formed in 1961, had been the first interracial group to score a Top 10 hit in America, and soon after became the house band for the legendary Stax/Volt label. Sorry to disagree with Marcus but the live "Time is Tight" from their boxed set is the definitive version. Anyway, I'm so grateful for this show because I've never been able to find 'Universal Language' anywhere. I recommend the 1967 album 'Hip-Hug-Her' to anyone just getting into them. They recorded so much music with so many people over the years, I've been a superfan almost twenty years and I'm still finding stuff I never heard before.

Had never heard this version of 'Time Is Tight'. It only proves that live performances have a way of bringing out the best music.

best R & B band ever, but they miss Jackson's drumming here - the guy was an animal - the human metronome

Univeral Language was the house record at the 1978 Roskilde Festival in Denmark. They played the record between the shows on the huge speaker system of the main stage. Especially Sticky Stuff sounded soooo powerful when it floated over the whole festival area. That was 'a bit different' then this clubby recording. But thanks for publishing this super rare music here!

If you never heard "Time is Tight " this is the version to check out. These guys have been playing together a long time. I listen to this version of " Time is Tight " almost every night, on the way to work. For me it's one of the best live performances by anyone .Most of these guys went on to be the " Blues Brothers band ". Check it out. No deserted island should be without this. Thanks, Markcus
