BLUES FOR THE SOULbloomfield_opt
This weekend’s $4 download is from blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield playing a relaxed set with some of his old friends from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Electric Flag. Recorded live in the Record Plant studios in 1974, the pristine sound quality of this recording makes it sound like you’re sitting in on a basement jam session with your friends…if your friends were world-class musicians.

We also have two new releases from the Ash Grove collection available for streaming and download. One is a recording of the original line-up of the Rising Sons including an 18 year-old Ry Cooder, a 23 year-old Taj Mahal, and future Spirit drummer Ed Cassidy. While working their way through a set of folksy electric blues, they also leave a trail pointing towards what would soon be known as the San Francisco Sound. Also be sure to check out a new show from Lightnin’ Hopkins, one of the original Texas blues men who is at ease with the audience, allowing both his improvisational skills and charming personality to shine through.

JAZZ FOR THE HEART
dizzy_optFor this week’s Jazz Thursday celebration, we released the entire day’s worth of music from the Newport Jazz Festival on 7/5/64, which includes the following: A lovely performance from the elegant Sarah Vaughan scatting and balladeering for an enraptured audience; a set from the charismatic bebop pioneer Dizzy Gillespie (recorded shortly after he gave up on his presidential run); Jimmy Smith taking the B-3 organ to stratospheric heights; the entertaining vocalist Oscar Brown, Jr. playing a collection of jazz standards he penned lyrics for; straight-ahead cornetist Ruby Braff’s swinging set that turns into an all-star jam by the end; and the mellow, smoky tones of Ben Webster’s tenor saxophone. For your one-stop listening pleasure, here’s a playlist of the entire day of jazz.

PSYCHEDELIC ROCK FOR THE MIND
haight t-shirt_optFueled by a heady mixture of drugs, love and music, 1960s San Francisco was the place to be if you wanted to expand the mind. This playlist features songs of San Francisco Psychedelia from the bands that were on the scene to help start the revolution: The Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape and more. WARNING: listening may induce flashbacks.
