Closing the Concert Vault Forums

On January 12 we closed the Concert Vault Forums. Since we introduced comments on individual concerts the Forums have received less and less attention from you, our visitors, and from us as well.  As George Harrison said, “All Things Must Pass” — it’s that time for our Forums.

We believe we can serve you better by focusing our resources on better ways to connect you with the music and with your fellow listeners. Thanks to those of you who made substantial contributions to the Forums over the years. Cheers!

Thanks Todd. The best way to let us know about requests like that is through our Contact Us page. We’ve gotten several requests for an Android app – stay tuned :-)

How out of sync with the times… I thought this was the age of transparency?! Oh, I get it, you’re keeping in step with Obama and his lies… Fuckin awesome WV, fuckin awesome.

Jessy, we have no plans to re-open the forums. But we do plan to expand the ability for listeners to exchange comments and follow other listeners in for all Vault concerts and performers, which we think will be a better experience.

Lars, if I could understand how this makes us less transparent, or makes us liars, I would reply to your comment. Feel free to elaborate.

What does >embed< do? Embeds track where and how is it used?

John, embed tags allow you to embed a single track player for the song you select into your own web or blog page. Here’s an example – James Taylor at Carnegie Hall.

I am appaled that we now have to pay nearly $50 to get 192kbps streaming… I am going to stop using this service now, it is just rediculous for shows that people can get for free at live music legal torrent sites… you used to be great when it was 192kbps streaming, but 96kbps isn’t good enough and you guys know it… I thought it was all about getting people to hear these great concerts originally, not you guys becoming interested in big commerce!.

And I did not mean that commen to be inflammatory, its just I am so annoyed that to recieve 192kbps your basically holding us all to ransom… thats a lot of money for me and I would love to become a WVIP member… but I simple can’t afford it, yet I also would like to listen to these recordings in decent fidelity. Can’t you at least make it higher than 96kbps, or 96kbps in AAC or something, so we’re getting ‘nearly’ cd quality. A lot of the concerts are bad quality recordings to begin with compared to studio releases, so having them in such low bitrate makes them even worse.
I am actually shocked by this whole WVIP thing…

Ben, we are sorry if we have disappointed you – that is certainly not our goal. But covering our costs is essential to continue offering the shows that we do on our site, and we think that WVIP is a very reasonable way to approach that – it pays for itself immediately with the $50 store credit it includes, and can be even more valuable with the deep discounts we offer to WVIP members on downloads.

Unlike the sites you reference, we actually pay performers and song publishers every time someone listens to a track at the vault. In addition, every concert at the vault has been archived by us, from tape to the web – not an inexpensive effort. It’s more appropriate to compare us to other music websites – Pandora, Napster, Rhapsody and lala for example – all of whom require some form of subscription.

All that said, we do recognize that many people like have no interest in downloads or merchandise – you may just want to listen to music online at our site. We are always looking into better ways to meet your interests while meeting our needs – stay tuned :-)

I have a collection of good quality concerts recorded from the radio that you might be interested in? Who might I contact? These were mostly recorded from WNEW FM and WLIR in the NY area.

I’m sorry, but this is very sad, why you don’t give it another chance. I think the forums is great add.

So what would be the best way to make suggestions or submit ideas? Also, I was wondering if it would be possible to have some sort of release calendar for future vault additions?

    Chris,

The best way to submit suggestions and ideas is via our Contact Us page.

Regarding new releases, we cover them a couple of ways. There’s a “Recently Added” link in the left column that always lists concerts added in the most recent 4 weeks, and we always announce new releases in our newsletter as well.

I’m with Ben on the 96kbps streaming quality. It’s too low quality and I have stopped sampling shows altogether or recommending the Vault to friends. But i know you have a business model to satisfy — we all gotta eat. Maybe I’ll have the cash after this damn Depression is over. But hey, it was great while it lasted. I’ll be watching for the Coupon Day offers.

Love the Vault, the audio quality sounds pretty good to me. I still intend to subscribe, as soon as i get the $$. Please keep the political comments to appropriate forums.

well, I dont think that was a great idea. Even if nobody posted any comment that does not mean that nobody interested neither read it! As known everything goes like a wave up and down.
As to George Harrison words actually those were Solomon King words “Everything Passes” or something like that, sorry I am Russian and it’s difficult to translate the Greats.
