Classic Posters with Katherine Featuring Griffin’s Flying Eyeball

Welcome to a new video blog series I call Touring the Vault, in which I’ll take you on brief tours through the archive of Wolfgang’s Vault, and give you a glimpse into our processes of learning and discovery. We’ll dig deep into the vast array of poster art, both inventoried and as-yet-unearthed, and you’ll hear stories of their creation. We’ll delve into the depths of a half a million photographic slides and negatives to discover the prizes of great never-before-seen shots. We’ll turn the pages of history within a library of rare concert programs, early rock magazines, and even early music contracts and priceless letters and telegrams between the folks who put on the shows and those performing them. Take a walk through Wolfgang’s Vault with me as we unlock a treasure trove of all things related to the live concert experience.

Thanks Karmalize for the feedback and the offer! As is stands now, I just bought one of those little Flip video cameras for the company and am trying a real “down and dirty” method of documentary filming – fast and furious. We’ll see how it goes! If you’re ever in San Francisco, let me know and I’ll trade you “The Katherine Tour” for a little bit of footage. Cheers!

P.S. – I’ve already recorded a segment on a portion of the photo archive – I’ll post it next week!!

Wow, who’ da thunk there was that much background to the flying eyeball.
I have been going concerts for over 30 years and am still amazed at how much history is out there to be discovered. Information like this could be added to a collegiate curriculum, sort of like the classes that sociology professor Rebecca Adams began with her groundbreaking studies into the Dead Head culture at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Looking forward to many more lessons in higher education.

Need to do that with every bg poster, QuickTime video, poster printing guide, accessible via iPhone app. So if in the field, for poster hunters to check print versions n variations. Like the fully evolved jaquaber / king, combined online Bible. as an ex employee of the archive, I just want all we learned about sizing up the printing versions, and variations in a quick guide accessible in the field from the net. so i could price and decipher posters on the fly… with images such as the squiggly line vs the straighter in the grass roots bg 0, or you explaining bg105 nuances like that with grant. Or simply showing color differences of bg 08 with the flourescent vs. the white etc.

Katherine: KEEP DOING THIS. That was cool. Songs are cool, but the stories and artifacts are the True Cool. It is stories like this that can resurrect or solidfy myths, legend and “forgottens”. This kind of story is why the Vault is the place to go…real-deal, True Cool.

I like to think that Griffin’s eyeball is peering back into its own socket…
