Concert Summary

This Black Sabbath concert at Pittsburg's Civic Arena captures the heavy metal Brits at a pivotal period. They had already released seven albums since their 1969 inception, and were in the studio recording their eighth album, Never Say Die!, the same month as this performance. With Ozzy having rejoined the band in January after a several month hiatus, Sabbath sounds energetic and more than capable of delivering a noteworthy show full of their signature raw energy, screaming guitar and howling lyrics.

It seems Ozzy's partying did not hamper this show, as his vocals are coherent and clear. Problems were becoming evident (again) earlier this month at Anaheim Stadium's "Summer Strut", when Osbourne missed lines, swayed out of microphone range on practically every other word, and generally was as wasted as the crowd, who had waited through three other performances (Lecca, Hagar, Van Halen) in 100 degree So Cal heat. We went to see Sabbath, but later talk of the town was mostly about headliners Boston and newcomers Van Halen, the local boys on the rise.

love how the tuned back up to regular E, though ozzy sounds a li'l bit strained on Snowblind, but so what, it's LIVE SABBATH, thank God (or the other guy downstairs?) Love the solos, and the sound is great..Thanx to Bill Graham OrG. for this site!!!!!

Don't understand why this is labelled as "WASP/SLEEP/BASS/NIB"...all I heard was less than a minute of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and part of the Warning... Great Jam, though...!!!

In Wasp Iommi seems to be mainlining Coltrane. I never heard another guitarist even try.

was working for a midwest promoter, and saw this tour several times. VH was just blazin'! One got tyhe feeling Ozzy was either leaving the band , or the world. It remains a top 5 show, and I've seen all the 'classic rock' bands there were/are to see. Glad Ozzy stuck with us! Peace...Leevon

I saw Black Sabbath on this tour in Atlanta. In one of the most bizarre lineups ever the opening act was The Ramones, touring behind "Road to Ruin", Van Halen behind their first album, and Sabbath behind their last studi Ozzy album "Never Say Die". Each band played a classic concert, Most fans felt that Van Halen won the night but I think they were just unexpected. It was clearly a Sabbath crowd, the Ramones were great but confused the metalheads for the most part, While I'd have prefered a song selection that emphasized Sabbath's earlier albums, I can't think of a concert that had more good music by three greater bands. Awe inspiring!

Geno, Although it has nothing to do with sabbath type jamming, a Supertramp show around Crime of the Century era, they did have a live Lp and in my opinion was not that good, but again during Crime era (74?) would be appreciated.

I saw this tour at the Oakland Coliseum. As the previous post said - the line was nuts, a was 14 years old, and high out of my mind. Opposing lines throwing bottles back and forth - pushing on the doors, crowd control fences collapsing - it could have easily been like the Who in Cinic. Felt very fortunate to make it in safely. I remember many folks asking us "what are you doing here? how old are you?" VH first tour - amazing! Sabbath last tour with Ozzy - fantastic! Although my musical tastes soon shifted as a result of my first Dead concert in Aug '79 - this remains my favorite rock concert of all time!
