Concert Summary

A mere five days after the release of Billy Joel's breakthrough second album, Piano Man, he was invited to tape a performance before an intimate audience at New York City's Palace Theatre for inclusion on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert television program. Virtually unknown, this performance would expose him to a large national viewing audience for the very first time. While he was only allotted enough time to perform a handful of songs, Joel, accompanied by his three cohorts, Russel Javors, Doug Stegmayer, and Liberty…entire summary

almost 36 years ago-awesome!! Billy the kid is 1 of my faves-"from a town known as Oyster Bay Long Island rode a boy w/a 6 pack in his hand"I can relate......

Sound quality could be better, but otherwise fantastic recording. It's nice to hear him do "Piano Man" before it became his cliche song. I would love to have been a member of an audience that didn't know "Piano Man".

The drummer he has here, Rhys Clark was his during the WMMR radio program and at the Mar-Y-Sol music festival, both in 1972.

He did use studio musicians, until late '75 when he moved back to New York and did the album Turnstiles.

I am willing to take a bet and say the band he had for this performance was the same he had on his March 1974 "Rock Concert" appearance: Drums- Rhys Clark Bass- Patrick McDonald Guitar- Don Evans

Its great to hear an artist (any artist) playing songs that are now warhorses when they were fresh, new, and exciting (and the artist is excited about playing them).

Listeners should know that the summary is mistaken as to the members of backup band. This took place well before those three mainstays became part of his regular backup team. Video footage exists and shows these three were not in the band for this performance.

Despite its length a very nice record with Joels two finest songs. Sadly, the sound quality is not that good.
