Poster Art Q & A

Description

Big Brother & the Holding Company star Janis Joplin is prominently featured in Patrick Lofthouse's undulating photo-collage design. Memphis soul-legend Booker T and the MGs were scheduled to play this concert, too, but begged off to attend the funeral service for Dr. Martin Luther King who'd been killed just a week before on the balcony of the Motel Lorraine. The Thursday concert of this three-performance event was held at the Fillmore Auditorium, and the unrest precipitated by King's death coupled with growing unease over the steady deterioration of the Fillmore's neighborhood advanced Bill Graham's plan to move his productions to another venue in the area.

The postcard was only printed once before the concert. It measures 4 5/8" x 7 1/8".

There were also some pre-concert double-sized mailers printed that were conjoined with the BG116 image (see BG115/116). They measure 4 1/2" x 14 1/4".

Promoters often created postcard versions of many of their concert posters and used them as promotional mailings. The postcards in Wolfgang's Vault are unique, small-format pieces of art that make a fascinating addition to any collection.
