Concert Summary

This is an excellent set from Big Brother and the Holding Company, performed right around the time when much of their classic Cheap Thrills album was being recorded. Joplin is in fine form here, and fans of James Gurley's grungy psychedelic guitar meltdowns will be delighted.

Following a brief tune-up sequence and excited audience encouragement from the emcee, Janis immediately leads the group into "Catch Me Daddy," with the boys belting out…entire summary

Well, since she died in 1970, writer4peace, we can rule out seeing her in 1971. As far as seeing her with THIS band, she left Big Brother in 1968, but she did do one more show which them in April of 1970, a benefit concert inS.F. for one local cause or another.

Saw Janis with this band in Boston 1970 or 71. She remains one of the most passionate singer I have ever had the pleasure to witness.

We miss you, dear sweet lusty Janice!

So, I'm listening to "I Need A Man to Love"--that grungy, raunchy, loping honey-dripper of a song, and I suddenly understood why they were the Hell's Angels' favorite band. I know they could be off-key and awful sometimes, sometimes they were just too darn drunk and stoned to play, but when they were ON, as they were on THIS night, they were pretty darn tough to beat. The thing is, neither Sam Andrew nor James Gurley thought of themselves as any virtuosos or anything, but they did have a CONCEPT--they were going to explore the farthest reaches of sound that an amplified electric guitar can make. The hum, the feedback, everything. They played EVERYTHING. And they played AROUND each other ("Summertime"), and it was BEAUTIFUL.

Sloppy? Sure. Unprofessional? Guilty. Smokin' hot still, over 40 years later--fuckin' aye!

Very good. "Road Block" sounds like it went on for a long time - a shame it's cut.

I was delighted to see your collection here, my not having ever listened to your site's stuff.. BUT ..and a big 'but' it is .. i can't STAND mp3 music!!! it's loss of quality might be good for your server-space but it's nothing but assaultive to my ears! WHY can't you put up good loss-less quality recordings ???
