Concert Summary

This is an excellent set from Big Brother and the Holding Company, performed right around the time when much of their classic Cheap Thrills album was being recorded. Joplin is in fine form here, and fans of James Gurley's grungy psychedelic guitar meltdowns will be delighted.

Following a brief tune-up sequence and excited audience encouragement from the emcee, Janis immediately leads the group into "Catch Me Daddy,"…entire summary

Always a great experience to see these people crank it out about a raw and rough as you could cut it. Remember bringing a semi straight girl to California Hall to watch. We were sitting on the stairs to the stage when Janis came up and looked at us and winked. Her eyes were REALLY BIG if you know what I mean. The outcome was the girl I brought was never semi straight EVER again. All she could say all night was she was having chills up and down her body like nothing she had ever felt.

I actually liked her with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Managers and all these other people can cloud your head. James Gurley taught Jimi some licks? I've never heard that, Jimi was a huge Buddy Guy fan - I'm sure he got some licks from him, but Hendrix was so original he probably learned from everybody and it came out being something only Jimi could produce. Mitch Mitchell said they would go to a club and see a terrible band and guitarist and Jimi would still learn something and go home and practice.

Eskiepup...I was at the S Clara Co. Fairgrounds concert in 1968 that you're referring to...it was called the Northern Calif Folk Rock Festival (not Monterey Pops). If you google this name you'll find material! It was still the all time show!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_California_Folk-Rock_Festival_%281968%29

"Summertime" is most likely the most amazing vocal in rock history....

If these two fine shows aren't quite enough for you, check out the last number of the Grateful Dead show on 7 June 1969. (Vault folks, please add as a "related concert"!) Enjoy!
