For the Newport Jazz Festival's inaugural year in New York City, impresario George Wein booked several one-of-a-kind gigs over the course of an expanded nine-day schedule. One of those special occasion gigs took place at Carnegie Hall on a program billed as "Swing Lives," featuring the Count Basie Orchestra and the Benny Carter Swing Masters. The trumpet solo on Honeysuckle Rose sounds like Joe Wilder, although he's not listed.

Jimmy Nottingham was one of the trumpeters, as announced...I can't remember which one he replaced. but I think it was Taft Jordan, who was a very distinctive soloist. Amazing to hear this after all this time!

I attended and have waited 39 years to hear it again! Thank you Wolfgang's Vault! btw, the second half of the concert was Count Basie and His Orchestra...first time I ever heard them in person.
    What a concert!

John S. Wilson wrote a review of this concert in the July 3rd, 1972 edition of the New York Times. In the lead paragraph, he mentions that the concert took place yesterday (July 2, 1972) at Carnegie Hall. Also, in the Radio listings of the New York Times edition of July 2, 1972, under the heading, "This Week's Concerts," it states that the concert will be broadcast live TODAY by WRVR, at the time, a commercial jazz station in NYC.

"I Can't Geet Started" is pulsating, beautiful, and commanding. I think I listened to it 6 times in a row before I could finally turn it off. Magnificent, magnificent, magnificent performances by the band and two complete masters.

according to Goldblatt the date is 2 July. [The Carnegie set for 4 July featured Hubbard, Rollins and Tyner.]
Also on the bill was Maxine Sullivan and Count Basie.
