Concert Summary

Art In America were around for one album and a fleeting glimpse of national exposure during the heyday of MTV in the early-1980s. Heavily influenced by the '70s progressive rock gods of the U.K. (Yes, ELP, Genesis, Alan Parson Project) but trying to fit into the electro-pop sound of that time, Art In America probably would have been done far better in the public eye if they had been signed to one of the major labels.

Spearheaded by Shishonee Flynn, and her brothers Chris (guitar/vocals) and Dan Flynn (drums), the group was augmented by bassist Jim Kuha and keyboardist Kent Richards,…entire summary

What a blast from the past! Just stumbled upon this page today... to gennation (who are you?) - and to others who were asking - the keyboardist Kent Richards (Ormiston) left the band in the early 80s, married and moved to L.A.. He worked in a few LA bands and did a lot of songwriting until getting into music and songs in film. That lasted many years but at the same time went to work in the equipment manufacturing side of things and worked for several of the major companies as US marketing manager. He also handled artist relations for those companies too. I kind of lost track of him after he left that part of the business...

I can't believe I found this site! My friends Mark and Lee Swidler and Larry Gach were AIA groupies and introduced me to the band. They band was absolutely fantastic. We attended this show (I think this is the show they opened for King Crimson) and just about every other local Detroit area show (and partied more than a little with the band!) I lived in Atlanta when the band recorded the album with Eddie Offord just outside of Atlanta and visited the band then as well.

Does anyone know if the album was ever made into a CD?

    What memories this brings back!

    Larry Rich

I saw them in Grand Rapids MI probably right around the same time this show was done. I also remember this KBRH show when it was broadcast locally. A bit after this tour I ended up working quite a bit with Kent Richards for about a year or so. flynnskie, any idea what happened to Kent? Haven't seen him since 1983 or 1984. By the way that title track still sounds as killer as it did back in the day. The band had a lot more potential.

I love the title song. Remember when they played it on MTV, when MTV was really about the music, and not dumb reality programs.

Oh, I would like to have heard AIA, too. I correct it by listening to their music for more then 20 years. It has not lost anything - still wonderful songs. No chance for a new record ????

I was surprised and glad to see this added to the vaults. I was 19 years old when I heard the single "Art in America" being played on the Dallas airwaves. I bought the album and played it many times. Always thought a harp player in a rock band was very unique and the overall sound of the band was great. This live recording sounds as good as the studio versions. Thanks to all the band members for contributing to my musical enjoyment many years ago! Take care.
