Formed in Los Angeles in 1981, this enormously popular heavy metal band built a fan base during its first decade with non-stop touring and word of mouth accolades. Moving to San Francisco in 1983, the band attracted a strong underground following [its debut album was originally titled "Metal Up Your Ass"] and eschewed mainstream radio play. By 1991, the more radio-friendly music of "Black Album" reached the top of the charts, and Metallica became an MTV regular with releases including "Live Shit: Binge and Purge," "Load" and "Reload," and "S&M."
