Jefferson Starship was next generation Jefferson Airplane that took off in 1974 and cruised at high altitude with occasional big hits, personnel changes and sold-out arena appearances for ten years. Kanter, Slick, Balin and Kaukenon (Peter not Jorma) were familiar Airplane names on board early and were joined by David Freiberg from Quicksilver Messenger Service and then Pete Sears in place of Kaukonen. By '78, Balin and Slick were gone, although Slick came back after a while, and the band's sound, always geared more towards commercial success than independent voice, was arena rock all the way. Red Octopus, from '75, was the band's most popular album, although right up through '82 it was producing music dismissed as muffled mainstream but still selling. When Paul Kanter left for more creative pastures in '84, he took the "Jefferson" with him, and what remained of the band continued its course as Starship....less
