Epitomizing the Haight-Ashbury culture and providing its soundtrack, the band established itself as a psychedelic unity with communal vocal harmonies and the synthesis of folk, pop, jazz, blues and rock elements. Airplane formed in 1966 and became one of the most influential of the San Francisco groups largely because of Grace Slick, their powerful and attractive lead singer who claimed that she tried to imitate the yowl of the lead guitar. The band made extensive use of light shows at their rock concerts and was the first band to manipulate the light show to completely support the music. Although they were the first San Francisco group to gain popularity in New York, ego eruptions eventually caused their break-up. Slick and Paul Kantner formed Jefferson Starship in 1974 and performed until health problems demanded Slick's attention. Airplane reunited over the years and produced new recordings sporadically.
