Genesis consisted of Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford. The long career of Genesis breaks down neatly into two contrasting eras. For the first half, Genesis was a cult band fronted by theatrical vocalist Peter Gabriel, playing majestic art rock that set the style for such bands as Kansas and Styx-story songs set to complex music with hints of classical pomp. Their long, ever-shifting songs kept the focus on melody and storytelling. Gabriel's performances became very theatrical after 1972, when he donned masks, robes and giant bat wings to act out the characters in different songs. By 1974, Gabriel and the band were pulling apart, and he added his vocals to music only after the band had already recorded. Gabriel launched a solo career in 1976. After Gabriel left, drummer Phil Collins took over as lead singer, proving himself a more down-to-earth front man, and the band's audience expanded as the band streamlined its music into romantic pop songs.
