As the great inheritor of Philadelphia pop-rock and one of rock's greatest pianists, Elton John was the preeminent rock and roller of the 1970s. Born Reginald Dwight in England, he took the name Elton John from the first names of his first band mates, Elton Dean and John Baldry. He won a piano scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age eleven and six years later left the school for show business. Joining lyricist Bernie Taupin in 1969, the two became a formidable songwriting team for the next eight years. His notable songs include "Honky Cat," "Rocket Man," and "Bennie and the Jets," among a list of others.
