Concert Summary

Listeners, please be aware this concert has a substandard quality in comparison to most of our concerts. We stress you listen to the concert first before purchasing it. While we think it is an important artifact, the quality does leave something to be desired. -Thanks, The Concert Vault

One of the most anticipated and ultimately satisfying run of shows ever to occur on the Fillmore West stage occurred in March of 1971, when Bill Graham presented three consecutive nights featuring Tower Of Power, King Curtis, and Aretha Franklin. Immortalized in part on the album

The album is great and the CD is even better. Frankly, the entire concert was great because it also included, along with Ray Charles, King Curtis and his group. What was so significant about Curtis was that, that was his last concert before he was shot and killed, possibly mistaken identity, robbery, or, in the words of Duane Allman, "Whoever did it knows what he did and it's a damn shame," then he launched off into "You Don't Love Me" as the vehicle for him to play Curtis's famed tune. The piece here, as others have said, has terrible sound problems. But, I encourage you to pick up the complete Fillmore Concert by, first, acquiring King Curtis at the Fillmore and the Aretha Franklin at Fillmore West. Same playlist but excellent sound quality, smart move to have Ray Charles and great to start with King Curtis. I was living in Nashville, TN at this time and recall the tour as she came through town on that very tour. In Nashville it started with the Chambers Brothers, then Stevie Wonder (who was about 16 at the time) and then Lady Soul herself. The show ended with all bands playing together, people on top of their seats, sweat pouring out of every pore, shouts bringing down the house and finished with fully satisfied customers. One more thing...Aretha is the Queen of Soul. But she's also human. Can't be "on" all of the time. But I can tell you when she sang at President Obama's inauguration, millions of people were spellbound. Go Lady Soul!

This has never been considered anywhere near prime Aretha by her fans. Rock critics, who aren't really into R&B or Aretha, are the ones who wax on about how great it is.
Except for a couple songs ("Dr Feelgood") , none compares to the studio versions and the previously unrecorded songs are all rushed or not fully formulated. Ray comes off better than Re.

The performance is strong but the sound quality of this recording borders on unlistenable because the electric piano is often too loud in the mix and is highly distorted. (Try "Make it with You" for an example.) I thought the problem was with the FLAC files I downloaded but I hear the same problem with the streaming version. This is an unusual problem for the Vault, but this concert ought to come with a disclaimer.

Great show, I was disappointed by the less than great sound quality. Lots of distortion.

    sorry for the repeat.

Rhino Records released an alternative mix of this performance as part of a two-disc version of the original album. It sounds a bit better, but not for four bucks. What a band, and with Ray Charles added on the encore of (i think) the last night!
    Long live the Vault!
