Its early shows and albums contributed some of the best-remembered instrumental jam music of the period. In 1965, at the request of folksinger Dino Valenti, guitarists John Cipollina and Jim Murray began putting together a band to back Valenti's singing. While Valenti was serving an eighteen-month jail sentence for drug possession, the pair added guitarist Gary Duncan, drummer Greg Elmore and bassist/singer David Freiberg. By the time Valenti was released from jail, there was no place for him in the band. Within months, Quicksilver was a staple on the San Francisco music scene, routinely appearing at both the Avalon and the Fillmore.
