Hailing from Los Angeles in 1966, the Peanut Butter Conspiracy (originally Peanut Butter Controversy) was formed from the remains of the Ashes after drummer Spencer Dryden moved to San Francisco to join the Jefferson Airplane. The PBC sound, rooted in psychedelia and sunshine pop, reflected the music trends of the time, and people were receptive. Their debut single, the symphonic rock "Time Is After You" was on a minor label and the success of the tune warranted a label bidding war, which Columbia won. Their most notable effort, 1967's "Great Conspiracy," led to a national tour and even put them on the outer-reaches of the Billboard Chart. Unfortunately, as the novelty of their name wore off, the Peanut Butter Conspiracy garnered less and less attention and eventually disbanded in 1970....less |
