He cut his teeth on show posters at Crosstown Bus in Boston, draw...more Jim Phillips, a Santa Cruz native and California College of Arts and Crafts graduate, is a graphic artist whose design work includes rock posters, skateboard decks and surfer T-shirts. He cut his teeth on show posters at Crosstown Bus in Boston, drawing his first poster for psychedelic band Lothar and the Hand People. His growing reputation as a talented psychedelic poster artist was complemented by his series of wildly painted "Magic Buses" which were popular with a small cult following in Santa Cruz but not a hit with local police. Permanently settling in California in 1968 with his wife and new son, Phillips began designing for Bill Graham Presents and Family Dog, where he later became Art Director, and limited his un-commissioned psychedelic painting to the kitchen cabinets.
