Hot Tuna began life as a blues-based side dish, the 1969 project of Jefferson Airplane charter members and longtime friends Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen. Squeezing tours and recordings around the Airplane schedule, Casady and Kaukonen were serving Hot Tuna exclusively by 1974, when they released their fourth album "The Phosphorous Rat." During the early years, the founders added violin to the mix of harmonica, guitar, drum and bass; broke up the band; embarked upon solo careers; and re-formed the band in 1984.
