Born Reginald Dwight in England, he took the name Elton John from the first names of his first band mates, Elton Dean and John Baldry. He won a piano scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age eleven and six years later left the school for show business. Joining lyricist Bernie Taupin in 1969, the two became a formidable songwriting team for the next eight years. His notable songs include "Honky Cat," "Rocket Man," and "Bennie and the Jets," among a list of others.
