Chuck Sperry's artistic career began in the mid-1980s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. His illustrations for often biting political comics bemoaned the hazards and lampooned the crashers, riding the wave to gentrification, of the squatter lifestyle, and tackled the struggle between the classes in general. When Sperry moved to San Francisco in 1988 the combination of his graphics skill and political fervor made him a perfect voice for the art of "civil disobedience." Grants from the NEA & Pew Charitable Trust and the Haas Foundation have contributed to the circulation of his work, and his portfolio includes event posters, including several for BGP, a retrospective of his original WW3 comic and magazine publications.
