Concert Summary

This show, dug out of the archives of the late Bill Graham, features one of the few professional live recordings made of the popular Bay Area blues-rock trio, Alice Stuart & Snake. The trio, which was an electric vehicle for singer/guitarist Alice Stuart, was formed after Stuart felt she had taken her career as far as she could as a solo acoustic blues artist.

Taking advantage of the path cut by another Bay Area artist, the late Janis Joplin, Stuart was determined to establish herself as more than just another attractive female singer. In the end, worldwide fame would elude her, but…entire summary

Tiny lady with a huge musical talent. She is playing her beloved black Fender Stratocaster here. Track one here is properly titled 'Full Time Woman' and Alice had a fine album of that title, too, which is well worth laying hold of.

Blues artist Clarence Van Hook, a hero of mine, invited Alice Stuart to do a workshop with him at the Sonoma folkfest in the early 1990s. After about 45 seconds of Alice on guitar I had two heroes. Still do. Rock? Blues? Reggae? Folk? Or do you feel like Hank Williams tonight? No way to categorize her. (But oh for a video of Alice on the blues stage at Bumbershoot in Seattle, c. 2000 -- what a day! Or my choice for emotional counterpoint: "Ruin Your Life" on The Station Agent soundtrack.)

Hearing this prompted me to dig through the stacks of vinyl, and pull out "Believing" from '72, and get it onto CD. Thanks for the memories Alice. Do you ever come East?

Thanks so much for including this in your concert choices! What a pleasant surprise and a nice compliment. Wow, my voice was really high back then!! Cheers, Alice

For a person who "discovered Aice Stuart in 2000, is a real pleasure to hear the early Alice.

This is a great performance, but its a bit limiting to simply call Alice Stuart and Snake a "Blues-Rock trio." Yes, there's some nice blues numbers here, but the band had much more of a rock feel than Stuart's work prior to or after Snake, with some pop ballads and reggae tunes thrown in as well.
