About

Alice in Chains

The early 1990s saw another birth in the Seattle grunge scene. With the success of bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam established, Seattle-born Alice In Chains was quickly marketed as part of the alternative scene although their sound was definitely more metal than pop. Lead vocalist Layne Staley's deep, ominous vocals were melodically synched to Jerry Cantrell's guitar, and the band's range was revealed in recordings from their '90 debut, Facelift, to the classic Jar of Flies. While the band's fan base grew, battles with drug addiction kept Alice In Chains from making it past the decade. Cantrell went on to pursue a solo career, and Staley, sadly, was found dead from a lethal overdose of cocaine and heroin in 2002.
